Great win against Waimea Heights

Tough opponents, a fast game, everyone's skills better than ever - and a win! Susie placed a corner kick neatly in the square, where it bounced off a Waimea Heights player and eluded their goalkeeper : the score was 1-nil, and that's where it stayed for the rest of this closely-fought match. It was terrific to watch and a credit to everyone. Good on you, Ross.

Next week's match against St Mary's at Sandown Park is the final one for this season, and we'll be having a picnic afterwards. The match starts at 1pm.

U12 2-1 win against Metro

hello to eye-owe-kneeWest Hobart U12 girls had a fine 2-1 win over Metro last Saturday.

With the flu going through Mt Stuart Primary School a number of players were out for the game, with only 9 players turning up. Metro were very reasonable in allowing one of their players, Rachael, to play with our team. (Metro had the full quota of 11 players)

West Hobart started the game aggresively, keeping the ball predominantly in their attacking half, which eventuated with Awein having an opportunity in front of goals and taking it with a great strike over the goalkeeper's head. Congratulations to Awein for her first goal, she has shown amazing improvement in her first season.

Metro turned on the pedal in the second half, keeping the ball mostly in their attacking half with the West Hobart team absorbing constant pressure. A Metro throw in right at Laura's chest saw her instinctively protect herself and a penalty kick followed when the ball hit her hands. Metro missed the penalty but was given another opportunity by the referee to which they scored.

However soon after, Tamsyn did an incredible run taking the ball from before the halfway line and sprinting past the defence to score a goal in the bottom right hand corner. A definite candidate for Goal of the Year and a great individual effort.

Well done to the players. Georgie played well in her first full game in defence, also providing support to the forwards. Laura showed continued improvement and is tackling well, getting herself right in front of the oncoming forwards. Susie showed flair down the right hand side, feinting past the defence. Megan and Tamsyn worked strong in the halves as did Annette in defence with her big throws from the sideline. Ione showed her improvement with big kicks from the defence and Isabella continued her strong consistent work-rate.

Well done girls, especially being one player down.

A special thanks to Rachael - it is not easy playing against your own team and she joined the West Hobart girls in good spirit.

Megan and Ione listening to Ross (seriously)

U11s rebound with a win

by Jerry de Gryse
The Girls Under 11s bounced back from a humbling 0-5 loss last week to defeat Fahan White 6-nil. An impenetrable defence (Alouisa and Sophie), good control of the ball and aggressive tackling in the mid- field (Grace and Tearliah) kept the pressure on the Fahan goal for the full 40 minutes. The only threat all day coming in the closing seconds of play with the ball finally being cleared after a long scramble at the goal mouth.

Anna, Jessica Hepburn, Niahm, Alison and Sophie (her first this year) all scored goals in an impressive display of teamwork. Well done girls.

The girls in a serious mood following their victory
Front L to R: Grace, Alison, Anna and Alouisa. Middle L to R: Sophie, Jessica Hepburn, Stephanie, Niamh, Tearliah and Matilda. Coach Jerry at the back.

U12's 1-1 Draw with Taroona

West Hobart U12 girls had an exciting 1-1 draw with Taroona on Saturday 5th August.

A 10 person a-side game was played at Sandown Park with West Hobart going ahead 1-0 not long after the start of the game with another good strike by Grace, who is clearly the team's leading goal scorer. Laura showed continued improvement, with her biggest kick well and truly clearing the ball out of defence and into attack. The team did a lot of running and was happy to have a rest at half time.

The second half continued well, with both sides evenly paced. A free kick just outside of the square saw Grace hit the cross bar with a good kick. Then a fine individual run down the left hand side (by a blonde girl nicknamed Whiz) saw Taroona score an unstoppable shot.

Both Isabella and Tamsyn played fine games in goals, stopping the ball and putting the team forward with long kicks. Once again the game was played with great spirit and we look forward to the last three games coming up in the season.

Here's an old photo that helps explain Jessica's soccer prowess: we bet she was playing footy on the beach with her friends.

St Mary's too good again but WH fight back

St Mary's were too good for West Hobart U12 girls again in the first half, going into the break 3-0 up. However a great fight back by the West Hobart girls saw them dominate the second half and score a goal to lose overall 3-1.

West Hobart started the first half very slowly, making a number of mistakes which allowed St Mary's to go 3-0 after only about 15 minutes. But true credit must go the girls in the way they fought back for the remaining playing time.

The halves worked harder, pressuring the ball more into their forward line and the defence of Georgina, Laura, Annette and Jessica formed a tighter unit.

In the second half, the girls combined very well as a team. Susie used her speed to run the ball down the right wing. Georgie and Megan ran their hearts out in the halves. A great shot by Georgie, high into the goals, was well saved by the St Mary's keeper.

Later in the half, Susie's long practice of taking corner kicks paid off with a kick right into the middle of the square where Grace timed a good strike into the goal, to the cheers of the entire team and parents.

The last three games have showed how well the team can play when they are committed to getting the ball and moving it forward. WELL DONE!
