Absolutely HUGE slideshow

Lots and lots of photos from last Saturday's match at Mt Nelson - remember, the one where we beat Fahan? Just about everyone makes an appearance in this production: dogs, Daleks, unicyclists, Tim the coach and of course you, the players. I hope everyone enjoys the pictures - Peter.

Thanks to Servers Australia for hosting our files - which they do free of charge - and increasing our data allowance (which is necessary for these slide shows).

A game with everything (and a win as well)

West Hobart defeated Fahan 3-1
A beautiful day - a beautiful game. West Hobart played an attacking game from the start and kept Fahan under constant pressure. Bella scored all three goals though at least another half-dozen shots also headed goalwards. Off-field interest was maintained by sightings of a golden Dalek as well as a boy riding a unicycle along the boundary. Oh yes and Charlotte had her birthday. And just look at that sunshine! Roll on global warming...

Later on, most of the team enjoyed drinks and sausages at our end of season barbeque held at Mt Stuart rec ground. Unwisely (for some) this was followed by a fiercely-contested soccer match pitting parents against offspring. The kids won 1-0 but were lucky to do so. Piers, Tim and Paul were relentless against overwhelming (though smaller) opposition.

End of season celebration plans - Saturday Aug 25

With two games to go for the season, it's time to celebrate a fantastic year.

Everyone is invited to an end-of-season BBQ for the U/11 team this Saturday from about 1:00 - 3:00pm. (This is not to be confused with the larger West Hobart Junior Soccer Club BBQ which will be held in October)

Venue: Benjafield Park, at the very end of Benjafield Terrace, Mt Stuart (Benjafield Terrace runs off Elphinstone Rd, where it crosses Gordon Ave. You can get there via Mellifont St or up Elphinstone Rd from North Hobart).

This site has got BBQs and newly opened toilets. There's also a small oval for a friendly kids vs parents show-down. Plus play equipment and a slide for younger children.

There'll be several girls away at Tournament of the Minds the following week so this Saturday seems the time to do it.

A team worthwhile...

To borrow from an old saying:

Its easy enough to be happy
When life flows along like a sweet song
But the girl worthwhile is the girl with a smile
When everything goes dead wrong

2007 has been a great year, full of many sweet victories, and until meeting Princes St at Waimea, only one close loss. For once we struggled against tenacious opposition and found ourselves a goal down at half time. The pressure was on us, and the girls fought valiantly, but never really got their game flowing and couldn't crack the solid, and often packed, defence of Princess St. For the first time this year, we failed to score and ended 0-2 down at the final whistle.

Happily though, our girls enjoyed the game and managed a hearty cheer for Princes St at the close.

We had a full team for the first time in weeks, with no-one off with cold, flu, or injury. It was great to see Sarah back after several weeks recovering from an operation and taking on the role of captain for the day. Thanks also to Phoebe and Freda who volunteered as goalies.

Princes St dead-ends our winning streak

West Hobart fought hard but succumbed to Princes Street 2-nil yesterday. Their winning edge was a strong defence plus star player Tess Nettlefold. Our girls hammered the goal at one point in the second half but were unable to score. It's good to see everyone back after colds and flu. And no - it's just coincidence that Annie McCann figures in all the photos today.

Game cancelled 11 August 2007

PaulAs the grounds are too wet, tomorrow's match against Waimea Heights has been cancelled. This is the second time we've missed out playing them! You'd also realise it was too wet for training this afternoon...

Late note 11 August: Today (Saturday) is perfect! Clear sky - no rain. Bad luck to everyone who needlessly slept in this morning however as Paul Tabart has now written up his notes on the Fahan game from 21 July - why not read all about it and relive a great game?   Official match report

Unstoppable victory over dogged St Mary's

The girls had a decisive 3-1 win against St Mary's today on a chilly Waimea Heights ground. Parents' fashions on the field impressed with beanies and other headgear. As St Mary's numbers were depleted the coaches agreed to play nine a side. This unfortunately left three of our team to cool their heels even further.

Charlotte Jessica and MeganBella scored two goals and Charlotte one - a good effort against tough opponents. Phoebe and Freda were dangerous as usual around goal while Zanna deserves praise for being in all the right places but suffered from some unwarranted jostling. Go Zanna! Susie kicked a nicely-placed corner late in the second half.
Close but no cigar

West Hobart vs Collegiate 8-0

A late post from the coach on last week's match...

The game vs Collegiate was another great all round performance from our girls. Our running, passing and tackling kept Collegiate constantly under pressure and gave their very skilful goalie plenty of work to do. At the other end of the field our two goalies for the day - Zanna in the first half and Bella in the second - barely touched the ball and struggled to keep warm on a damp, overcast day.

In the first half, captain Kira won the toss and chose to take the kick off. We had a number of forward thrusts kept at bay by their goalie, while Megan, Kira and Audrey were a Rock of Gibraltar in defense keeping the ball far away from Zanna in goals. Charlotte, Lily, Susanna and Bella kept control in the midfield, giving plenty of opportunities to Jessica, Freda and Phoebe up forward. Finally a lovely cross from Bella found Phoebe metres from an open goal who put it away to open our account. Minutes later Jessica kicked a strong goal, with one more to Phoebe before half time.

After some energising snakes and oranges in the half-time break, the forward pressure continued in the second. Kira kicked a great goal after attacking the ball like a tiger, followed by some silky skills and finishing by Tessa to put us 5-0 up. A near miss from Megan was followed shortly after by another bullocking effort to move the ball forward and across to Tessa who capped off another great game with her second goal. Audrey, Phoebe and Holly's defensive work kept Bella relaxed in goals, and Susanna was sensational on the right mid-field, running and passing repeatedly into the goal area. The dynamic boot of Charlotte and the ever-dangerous Freda led to two more goals and a final tally of 8-0.

The team-work and passing of the girls is a real feature of their play and they should rightly be proud of their achievements. As Bella's dad Peter mentioned after the game, the way our team plays is equal to or even better than the combined Central Region team. Keep up the good work!
